Ongoing dispute in the Middle East - Al-Sinwar's communications disclose Hamas's tactics.
The leader of the hard-line Islamic group Hamas in Gaza, Yahya al-Sinwar, has not agreed to a truce with Israel, an exclusive report in the US "Wall Street Journal" states. This decision is believed to be due to his perception of advantages in prolonged battles with civilians as casualties among Palestinians.
Al-Sinwar's stance was evident in messages he sent to Hamas negotiators involved in the ceasefire talks, as per the newspaper. Though the nature of these messages is not confirmed - whether text, audio, or otherwise - the "Wall Street Journal" claims to possess a large number of them. In one message, he boasted, "We have the Israelis right where we want them."
Furthermore, Al-Sinwar appears to have little concern for human life. He explicitly conveyed to the negotiators that he saw Israel as the bigger loser in the conflict. This attitude is not unique to him, as other Palestinian leaders have previously used violence against Israelis as a form of pressure. However, the scale of collateral damage in this particular war - civilians killed and infrastructure destroyed - is unusually high between Israelis and Palestinians.
Al-Sinwar masterminded the Hamas attacks on October 7 in the Israeli border region, which led to the current Gaza conflict. Initial messages to truce negotiators suggested his surprise at the brutality displayed by Hamas militants and ordinary Palestinians alike. In one message, he admitted, "Things got out of hand," and blamed the kidnapping of civilians and children on "gangs" that should not have been involved in such actions.
While Israel has tried relentlessly to eliminate him, al-Sinwar continues to reside undetected in the Gaza Strip. The reports also hint at his willingness to die in the war.
