AirPods 4 Now Inherit the Top Feature from AirPods Pro
At today's iPhone 16 unveiling event, Apple also took some time to revamp a few of its AirPods, introducing the AirPods 4 and a slightly modified version of the AirPods Max. Additionally, the AirPods Pro 2 are set to receive some software updates.
AirPods 4
The AirPods 4 now come in two variations, replacing the AirPods 2nd and 3rd generation versions. These include the standard model and one equipped with active noise cancellation, a feature typically exclusive to the Pro version.
Both versions of the AirPods 4 utilize Apple's H2 chip, which powers features such as Personalized Spatial Audio. On models with active noise cancellation, you'll also benefit from features previously reserved for the Pro, like Conversation Awareness. This feature reduces your music volume when your AirPods sense you're engaging in a conversation.
H2-powered AirPods can interact with Siri through head gestures, allowing you to nod your head up and down for yes or from side to side for no.
The AirPods 4 feature improved acoustic architecture for superior sound quality. All AirPods 4 charging cases now feature a USB-C port, and the case for the active noise cancellation model also comes with a speaker for Find My and wireless charging capabilities.
The standard AirPods 4 will cost $129, and the AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation will set you back $179. Both versions are now available for pre-order and will ship on September 20th.
Updated AirPods Max
If you were expecting a new AirPods Max, you'll be disappointed. The specifications remain the same, and the headphones still utilize the Apple H1 chip for features like Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode.
What's new is that the AirPods Max now come in five new colors: Midnight, Blue, Purple, Orange, and Starlight. The headphones also support personalized spatial audio and feature a USB-C port.
The updated AirPods Max cost $549, with pre-orders available today and shipping starting on September 20th.
AirPods Pro 2 Software Updates
Apple introduced the AirPods Pro 2 last year during the iPhone 15 event, although a new model hasn't been released just yet. However, the company is planning to introduce a couple of new health features later this year, subject to FDA approval.
The first is Hearing Protection, which will be activated by default and uses the H2 chip and machine learning to provide passive noise reduction. For example, if you're at a loud concert, your AirPods Pro 2 will reduce the music volume to safe levels without completely cutting it off.
A new Hearing Test in the Health app will also allow you to take a test to check for hearing loss. The test takes around 5 minutes and uses your iPhone and AirPods Pro 2.
Lastly, you'll be able to use the AirPods Pro 2 as "clinical-grade" hearing aids. This will come in the form of an update for the earbuds and an accompanying iOS 18 update. The Hearing Aid mode for AirPods Pro 2 will be available in 100 regions.
The AirPods 4, being the latest iterations of Apple's popular wireless earbuds, are a significant addition to the tech landscape, replacing the AirPods 2nd and 3rd generation versions.
With the AirPods Max receiving an update, customers now have five new color options to choose from, including Midnight, Blue, Purple, Orange, and Starlight.
