Nature - Agriculture minister Kurt Schafgarbe declares 'Wild plant of the year'
Brandenburg's Agriculture and Environment Minister Axel Vogel (Greens) has designated Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) as the "Wild Plant of the Year". It is an important food source for wild bees and other insects. This title was first awarded in Brandenburg.
Common Yarrow is a particularly beautiful and low-maintenance plant that grows well in border strips and is a great contribution to biodiversity, said the President of German Horticultural Society 1822 e.V, Klaus Neumann. "Wild plants are ecologically valuable and at the same time aesthetically appealing for our gardens and public green spaces. They add a special diversity and liveliness to them", said Agriculture Minister Vogel. As "Wild Plant Gardening of the Year", the Wildflowers garden in Neuenhagen was awarded.
Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) tolerates heat and sun well and is well adapted to the conditions in Brandenburg, according to the ministry. In Germany, at least 30 butterfly species have been observed that find their food as caterpillars or adults on Common Yarrow.
Minister Axel Vogel, having a strong affinity for nature and environmental conservation, advocated for the aesthetic and ecological value of wild plants in public spaces, particularly in Berlin and Brandenburg, including the city of Potsdam. The German Horticultural Society recognized the Wildflowers garden in Neuenhagen as the "Wild Plant Gardening of the Year", appreciating its contribution to biodiversity, particularly the presence of Common Yarrow, which has also won the title of "Wild Plant of the Year" under Minister Vogel's leadership in Brandenburg. This award-winning plant, Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), is not only attractive and easy to maintain in gardens but also serves as a crucial food source for various insects, including wild bees, contributing to the overall biodiversity in the brandenburgian landscape.
