US election campaign - After the attack: 'I should be dead'

Former US President Donald Trump expressed gratitude after an relatively harmless assassination attempt on him. In an interview with the tabloid "New York Post", he said: "By luck or by God - and many people say it was God's work - I'm still here". Regarding the attack on Saturday, during which he was injured in the ear, he told the newspaper further: "I shouldn't be here. I should be dead. I should be dead."

As Trump described in a joint interview with the "Washington Examiner", a small gesture during a campaign event may have saved his life. He had just looked at a sign on the topic of immigration at the moment of the attack and turned his head slightly towards it. "I didn't realize it at the time. I rarely look away from the crowd. If I hadn't done that, then we wouldn't be having this conversation, or?"

Photos taken immediately before the assassination attempt show Trump turning slightly to the right and pointing towards the sign with his hand. According to his own statements, the shooter then hit him in the right ear with a bullet.

"The doctor in the hospital said he had never seen anything like it before," quoted the "New York Post" Trump further. The Republican had worn a white bandage over his right ear during the interview, but his staff had not allowed any photos, reported the newspaper.
