After spending a year behind bars, German individual gains freedom in Mallorca jail.
Last year, Spanish authorities apprehended a group of young German males on Mallorca. They were implicated in the alleged rape of an 18-year-old. As per recent reports, the defendants from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) have been released from pre-trial confinement. The investigation continues.
Several young men, charged with committing a group sex crime, have been granted bail after spending more than a year in pre-trial detention on Mallorca, according to a trusted source based in Palma. The motives and specifics of their release are yet to be disclosed.
The accused are alleged to have coerced an 18-year-old German tourist, whom one of them had met at the Ballermann beach, into participating in sexual activity or being a mere spectator. According to police reports, one of the suspects even recorded the act using his phone in July 2023.
The five males, aged between 21 and 23, who were detained on Mallorca on suspicion of group rape, hail from the Märkischer Kreis region of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The responsible public prosecutor's office in Hagen is continuing its investigation against the five individuals, as announced.
One of the group members was released shortly afterwards. He successfully provided credible evidence to prove his innocence in relation to the alleged rape, it was stated. As per "Mallorca Zeitung", a sixth suspect was granted bail of 10,000 euros in September.
The release of all suspects does not signify the closure of the case. The investigation continues based on the existing information. A conviction in Spain could result in prison sentences of up to 12 years.
The date of manufacture of the device used to record the allegedly illegal act is yet to be revealed. Despite being released, the defendants must return to North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) by the year of manufacture of their passports.
