The SPD, which has been in crisis for years, apparently faces a new beginning at the top. The leadership duo of Florian von Brunn and Rinja Endres apparently stands down.

Social Democrats in Crisis - After earthquakes in Fraktion: Bavaria's SPD leaders at risk

After an unexpected earthquake in the state faction, Bavaria's SPD state chairman Florian von Brunn is in danger of stepping down. According to reports from the German Press Agency, he will speak about details of his political future and the further course of action in the faction and in the state association early on Thursday afternoon. It is assumed in the party that the 55-year-old will then make his leadership positions in the party and the state faction available. However, his potential successor remained open at first.

The news came as a surprise to many in the SPD during a faction meeting on Wednesday. Only four deputies stood behind him, eleven deputies voted against Munich's man and thus clearly withdrew their trust. Two SPD deputies abstained. This was reported consistently by several media.

A new election is expected to take place in the faction as early as Tuesday. Co-state chairman Ronja Endres' time in leadership responsibility may also soon come to an end - von Brunn had brought her to the state leadership as his co-chairman during his bid for the state chairmanship.

Speculation about von Brunn's political future as state and faction chairman had been rife since the SPD suffered another heavy defeat in the state election last fall with a mere 8.4 percent. With him as the candidate, the SPD achieved historically poor results - even worse than in 2018 (9.7 percent). Despite all the criticism directed at him personally as well as the campaign and the later processing of the election defeat, von Brunn was able to hold on to his positions.

Despite the serious crisis that the Bavarian SPD has been in for years, the timing of the internal revolt came as a surprise. From the faction, it is said that the relationship between the deputies and von Brunn had become increasingly poor.

Von Brunn has been at the helm of the SPD and the faction since 2021. He set himself the goal of making the party, which was already in crisis at the time, a successful political force in Bavaria again upon taking office. With his particularly confrontational style towards the CSU and the AfD, and his approach, he had caused debates within the party on several occasions.

  1. The potential successor to Florian von Brunn, the embattled state chairman of Bavaria's SPD, remains uncertain, as indicated by reports from the German Press Agency.
  2. Despite the expected crisis in the state faction following the unexpected earthquake, von Brunn has been determined to make the SPD a successful political force in Munich since his appointment in 2021.
  3. The announcement from von Brunn concerning his political future and the future course of action in the faction and state association is scheduled for early Thursday afternoon, according to the German Press Agency.
  4. The SPD's 55-year-old state chairman is in danger of stepping down after only eleven deputies voted against him during a faction meeting, indicating a clear loss of trust.
  5. This latest crisis in the Bavarian SPD comes amidst a prolonged political crisis, with the relationship between the deputies and von Brunn reportedly deteriorating significantly.
