US election campaign - After Biden's TV blunder: crisis mood among the Democrats

After Joe Biden's TV gaffe caused a commotion among US Democrats, Lloyd Doggett, the first Democratic congressman, publicly called for a place for an alternative candidate.

"Unlike Trump, Biden has always dedicated himself to our country and not just himself," quoted US media the Texas politician. "I hope he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw."

Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the House, praised Biden's "judgment and strategic thinking" on MSNBC. However, she also acknowledged that it was a "legitimate question" whether his gaffe was "just an episode or a condition." Pelosi emphasized that both candidates should be subjected to rigorous scrutiny regarding their fitness for the presidency.

CBS reported that Biden would meet with Democratic governors from various states on Wednesday to secure their support. Before that, CNN reported, citing sources familiar with the situation, that several governors had contacted each other at the beginning of the week to propose such a meeting.

According to a report by the Washington Post, Senator Joe Manchin threatened to publicly break with Biden after the TV debate. Manchin, known as a swing voter, recently switched to the Democrats but continues to align with his former party as an independent senator.

The report stated that Manchin changed his confrontational stance under pressure from the Democratic minority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer. The newspaper quoted an unnamed Democratic party representative as saying, "Nobody wants to be the first to stab Julius Caesar."

In the past few days, Democrats from the ranks have publicly called for a personnel change, but the party's most prominent figures have so far held back from harsh criticism.
