Fundraising for Kamala Harris - After Biden: 50 Million Dollars Donation for Democrats

Joe Biden's withdrawal from the US Presidency race triggered a wave of donations for the Democrats. According to ActBlue, US media reported over $50 million (around 46 million Euro) in donations on Sunday. "This was the biggest day for online donations for the Democrats since the 2020 election," wrote the newspaper "New York Times". ActBlue is the leading online platform for Democratic donations.

US President Biden called for donations to his vice president Kamala Harris' campaign after his withdrawal from the presidential race. Previously, he had suggested Harris as a replacement candidate for the November election. The decision ultimately lies with the delegates of the Democratic Party in all states.

After Biden's TV debate debacle, major donors initially held back their contributions. However, donations for the Democrats suddenly flowed in at a high tempo: just five hours after Biden's withdrawal from the race, ActBlue announced on its X platform that it had already collected around $27 million from small donors.

There had been discussions in the US about what would happen to the millions of donations the Democrats had already collected and who would have access to them. Vice President Harris could potentially access the campaign apparatus and possibly also the donations from Biden, as she was already part of his re-election campaign.
