AfD party conference confirms Chrupalla and Weidel as party leaders

Tino Chrupalla remains at the top of the AfD. The party congress elected him with approximately 83 percent.

The AfD confirmed Tino Chrupalla and Alice Weidel as co-chairs in office. At the party congress in Essen, 426 delegates voted for Chrupalla. There were 89 opposing votes and 17 abstentions. With this, the 49-year-old was re-elected with 82.7 percent. Weidel received 79.77 percent. 418 delegates voted for Weidel, 106 voted against, and 13 abstained. There were no counter-candidates.

Chrupalla spoke of an "overwhelming result" - in his election two years ago, he had only received around 53 percent. Previously, an initiative had failed that urged the party to renounce the co-chair system and instead install a chairman and a general secretary.

Without the challenge from opposing candidates, Chrupalla and Weidel were once again elected as co-leaders of the AfD party, securing overwhelming majorities at the party conference in Essen. Despite previous calls for a change in leadership structure, Chrupalla received 82.7% of the vote, while Weidel garnered 79.77%.
