- AfD may advertise with "hidden Hitler salute" on election poster
The AfD is known for its ability to irritate and provoke. Now, the judiciary is dealing with an election poster of the party in Brandenburg. The poster features a seemingly happy family - mother, father, and three children. The parents have their arms over their children. "We protect your children," is the slogan above them. The gesture could symbolize a protective roof. Others see it as the banned Hitler salute.
Left politician Anja Kreisel has therefore filed a complaint against AfD politician Wilko Möller from Frankfurt (Oder), reports RBB.
According to Kreisel, the poster may possibly violate the ban on using symbols of unconstitutional organizations. The district chairwoman and state parliament candidate of the Frankfurt Left sees the gesture of the couple on the election poster as a possible Hitler salute.
AfD politician rejects allegations
AfD politician Möller denies the allegations. The criticism is incomprehensible to him, he said to the "Markische Oderzeitung". "I can't understand how that could be a Hitler salute, especially since the image was created by a media agency and we bought it. You'd have to have quite an imagination," RBB quotes him. He doesn't know why the responsible persons chose this photo. The roof symbolizes security and protection. Seeing a Hitler salute in it is "far-fetched".
According to investigations by the "Markische Oderzeitung", the image comes from a stock photo platform. Such photos can be used in different ways depending on the license.
Möller recently stirred up controversy on the 80th anniversary of the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 2024. In a video on the TikTok platform, he called for "resistance" against the federal government. Every citizen can resist, he said, and referred to the state election on September 22, where citizens can "put the cross in the right place".
The complaint against AfD politician Wilko Moeller stems from the perceived Hitler salute in an election poster, with the gesture seen as a violation of the ban on using symbols of unconstitutional organizations. Despite this, Moeller vehemently denies the allegations, stating that he finds it inconceivable how the gesture could be interpreted as a Hitler salute, as the image was purchased from a media agency and used without intention to convey such meaning.
