Saxony - AfD man is the only candidate for mayor in Großschirma
In the mayoral election in the Saxon small town of Großschirma, the AfD is the only party participating. During the voting on September 1st, only the name of AfD candidate Rolf Weigand appears on the ballot, as the other candidates from CDU and Independent Citizens' Association did not submit proposals for the re-run. The election committee announced in a dpa inquiry that no other proposals had been submitted for the re-run.
Weigand, who sits in the Saxon state parliament for the AfD, won the mayoral election in the 5,500-resident community in March with almost 60 percent. He would have been the first in Saxony to be elected mayor with an AfD party membership. However, the supervisory authority declared the election invalid later due to violations of election regulations.
The mayoral election was necessary due to the suicide of the long-term office holder in the fall. Weigand already serves as the first deputy mayor. He had also run in the previous election, but was defeated then. According to the communal election law, voters can write down another person on their ballot if they do not want to give their vote to the candidate.
The AfD had already taken the chairman's seat in the Pirna town hall with a candidate who is not a party member. The Saxon AfD is classified as right-wing extremist by the state constitutional protection, but defends itself legally against this classification.
- Despite being classified as right-wing extremist by the Saxon constitutional protection, the AfD is still a significant force in local politics, as demonstrated by their candidate Rolf Weigand's victory in the mayoral election in Saxony's small town of Großschirma.
- In the upcoming municipal elections in various German towns and municipalities, several prominent parties like the CDU and independent parties are expected to participate, but in Großschirma, only the AfD is participating due to unspecified reasons.
- The voting results from the Mayoral election held in Saxony's Großschirma on September 1st showed the majority of voters favored AfD candidate Rolf Weigand, re-affirming his strong influence in the small town.
- Controversially, the mayoral election in Großschirma was marked by the involvement of the AfD, a party often associated with right-wing extremism, which raises concerns about the influence of such parties in local politics and the potential impacts on the community.
- The recent mayoral election in Großschirma highlights the presence of political divisions in Germany, with the AfD gaining significant ground in many regions, a trend that has spilled over into various Mayoral election and other local political races across the country.
