Aerial drone detects potential absence of tornado in Gröditz - DWD's assessment
Small town of Groditz in Saxony endured severe destruction during the midweek storm, as per the German Weather Service (DWD). No signs of a tornado were spotted around the Landkreis Meißen district, DWD claimed.
In Landkreis Meißen, there were significant damages due to a storm on that Tuesday. Initial rumors circulated that Groditz could've been hit by a tornado, but the city administration of Groditz disputed these claims using drone footage. They believed the trail left behind was indicative of a tornado.
However, the DWD's preliminary findings refuted the existence of a tornado. A spokesperson from the Tornado Expert Group said, "As of now, we aren't verifying a tornado." Radar pictures suggested that the damages were most likely due to strong straight-line winds (gusts). They further stated, "At present, we aren't privy to any tornado footage."
Complete certainty can only be attained through a physical appraisal of the damages and their pattern. This extensive investigation would take its sweet time. Consequently, a detailed assessment of the tree damage structure is essential. Nevertheless, based on the images, the tornado specialists speculate that winds in Groditz must've blown at more than 140 kilometers per hour.
City spokesperson reports that an extensive number of trees were uprooted, roofs were wrecked, a power line, a railway, and cars suffered damages due to the storm in Groditz.
