Following a wreckage from a ship collision incident in the German Bight, approximately ten months prior, a deceased sailor has been discovered. The Water and Shipping Administration in Bonn reported this find. The seafarer was retrieved from the rear end of the submerged cargo vessel, "Verity," on a Friday.
Hailing from the Isle of Man, the cargo ship, "Verity," collided with the freighter, "Polesie," on October 24, 2023, approximately 22 kilometers southwest of Helgoland and 31 kilometers northeast of Langeoog, in the high seas. With a length of 91 meters, "Verity" sank soon after.
Three crew members remain unaccounted for
There were seven individuals aboard. Regretfully, three persons remain untraceable. The skipper had been salvaged deceased in the aftermath. Two crew members had initially been rescued from the turbulent seas. Conversely, the "Polesie," accommodating 22 passengers, continued to float due to the prompt action of the rescue operations team based in Cuxhaven.
The wreckage's rear section, more precisely the stern, was recovered from a depth of around 40 meters on Friday with the help of a floating crane. Previously, the ship had been separated into two halves. The front half will be lifted on Monday.
The Water and Shipping Administration in Bonn announced that the following shall be added to the investigation: the discovery of a deceased sailor from the rear end of the submerged cargo vessel, "Verity." Three crew members, including the skipper, are still unaccounted for following the ship collision incident with "Polesie."
