ADAC warns of traffic jams at the weekend

Travelers are estimated by ADAC to be facing one of the worst traffic weekends of the season this week. This is due to Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria starting their holidays last, as well as a second wave of travelers from the north expected.

Anyone who wants to avoid being in a traffic jam during their commute is advised to travel between Tuesday and Thursday. The Autobahns with the highest risk of traffic congestion in both directions, according to ADAC, are reportedly in the metropolitan areas of Hamburg, Cologne and Munich. Most delays are expected to occur at construction sites where lanes are reduced or particularly long.

Due to controls at several borders, such as Poland and the Czech Republic, travelers should expect delays of up to an hour at these borders. Delays of several hours are expected at the borders to Greece and Turkey.

The journey abroad is likely to take longer, especially on the Tauern-, Fernpass-, Inntal-, Brenner-, Karawanken-, Pyhrn- and Gotthard-routes, as well as on the roads to the coasts, and towards Scandinavia and the Netherlands.

Despite the anticipated traffic jam during the weekend due to holiday starts in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, starting your vacation on a different day, such as on a weekday, might help avoid the congestion. It's worth noting that ADAC warns of high-risk areas on the Autobahns in Hamburg, Cologne, and Munich, often caused by construction sites.
