Second highest security level - Acute terror threat: US military in Europe apparently on heightened alert

US Military bases in Germany and other European countries are reportedly on heightened alert due to increased terror threat, according to media reports. The Pentagon reportedly called for the second highest security level, Force Protection Condition Charlie, at the bases over the weekend, CNN reported, citing two unnamed government sources. This security level, Force Protection Condition Charlie, is declared when there is an imminent threat of a terror attack.

Fox News quoted a defense official as saying there are "credible information[s] that point to an attack on US bases in the coming week or so." The Pentagon initially declined to comment on the matter when approached by CNN.

Increased Terror Threat – Unclear Nature of the Threat

It remained unclear what the nature of the alleged threat was. The defense official told Fox News that it was not related to the parliamentary elections in France.

The responsible US military command (Eucom) with headquarters in Stuttgart refused to comment on the specific security measures of the military when approached by CNN. However, a spokesperson stated that Eucom constantly checks a multitude of factors that are relevant for the safety of US military personnel abroad. "In the course of these efforts, we often take additional measures to ensure the safety of our military personnel," the spokesperson said. No further details were provided.

  1. Despite the unknown nature of the terror threat, US military bases in various European countries, including Germany, maintained a high level of alert over the weekend.
  2. The US military in Europe, under the command of Eucom based in Stuttgart, continuously monitors various factors to ensure the safety of their personnel, leading to the implementation of additional security measures.
  3. According to a defense official, the heightened alert is not connected to the parliamentary elections in France, but Fox News reported receiving credible intelligence about a potential attack on US bases within the coming week.
  4. CNN, citing anonymous government sources, reported that the Pentagon elevated the military's security level to Force Protection Condition Charlie due to the elevated threat of a terror attack.
  5. With the increased risk of terrorism across Europe and US military bases, prominent news networks, such as Fox News and CNN, have consistently covered the developing situation to keep their audiences informed.
