Activists: 700 executions in Iran since the beginning of the year
According to activists, 700 death sentences have already been carried out in Iran this year. The Norway-based human rights organization Hengaw wrote this on the online platform X (formerly Twitter). Hengaw did not provide a comparative figure for the previous year.
According to the organization Iran Human Rights, the average number of executions in recent years is 600 per year. Looking back at the first ten months of the year, Iran Human Rights recently reported an increase in executions in Iran.
Human rights activists have been criticizing the use of the death penalty in the Islamic Republic for years. There are no official figures on executions. Iran also executed eight participants in the anti-system protests last year. Human rights organizations repeatedly accuse the Iranian government of using executions as an "instrument to suppress protests and ethnic minorities".
The international community has expressed concern over the high number of executions, with human rights advocates urging for the abolition of the death penalty in Iran. The use of the death penalty, particularly for individuals charged with violating human rights, raises serious questions about justice and the upholding of fundamental human rights.
