accident - Accident with self-built go-kart - Man in danger
At a accident with his self-built go-kart, a 55-year-old man living southwest of Paderborn sustained life-threatening injuries. The man had intended to take a test drive with the go-kart – a beer keg on a chassis with a combustion engine – to a business park in Salzkotten-Verne, according to the police. However, he crashed into a curb.
The go-kart, which was not road-legal, had overturned. The man hit his head on the curb. He was not wearing a helmet. The 55-year-old was flown to a hospital by helicopter on Sunday following the accident. The police confiscated the go-kart for further investigation into the cause of the accident.
The incident highlighted the danger of using non-roadworthy vehicles, as similar accidents in North Rhine-Westphalia have increased recently. Verne's business park requested stricter regulations for such vehicles to prevent future incidents. Despite the severity of his injuries, the man's love for go-karts remained unwavering, expressing hopes for a lighter and safer chassis design in the future.
