Education - About 2,300 more students in the new school year

The number of female and male students in Saarland schools is expected to increase by approximately 2,300 in the next school year. In total, around 124,500 students will attend school in 2024/2025, as stated in a response from the SPD-Landesregierung to a parliamentary inquiry by Abgeordnete Jutta Schmitt-Lang (CDU). The largest increase in students is expected at primary schools. The number of primary school students is therefore projected to grow by around 1,100 to nearly 36,000.

According to the Landesregierung, approximately 150 more classes will be created across all school types in the next school year. This will result in a total of nearly 5,700 classes. The majority of the increase is expected at primary schools, with about 60 additional classes. The creation of these additional classes will necessitate an additional 174 full-time teaching positions. Sixty of these positions will be filled by creating new positions as of August 1st, while the remaining need will be met through "free share positions". The new school year in Saarland begins on August 26th.

In Saarbrücken, the city in Saarland, the anticipated increase in primary school students contributes to the overall student population growth. Approximately 1,100 more children will attend primary schools in the upcoming SPD-led school year. The Saarland Education system, in its effort to accommodate this growth, is planning to establish about 60 additional primary school classes.
