Traffic - A5 partially open again after fire involving hazardous goods truck

After a cargo truck carrying Sodium Hydroxide overturned on Autobahn 5 near Rosbach in the Wetterau District, the highway's carriageway has partially been reopened. However, the recovery process could still last the entire day, according to a police spokesperson. Damage to the vehicle alone is estimated to be around 150,000 Euro. The cause is believed to be a technical defect, as per police reports.

The truck had been loaded with Sodium Hydroxide, which is a strongly diluted cleaning agent. The substance itself is not dangerous but requires a specialized company to pump it out of the truck to remove it from the highway, as the spokesperson explained. For these operations, the middle lane of the Autobahn is expected to be closed again this morning. In the morning rush hour, traffic was already backed up for approximately ten kilometers.

Only once the truck has been recovered will it be determined if the road surface at the site of the fire needs to be scraped off, the police spokesperson added. The driver was unharmed in the incident. Autobahn 5 was previously closed for hours between the Friedberg interchange and the Bad Homburg Cross in the direction of Frankfurt due to the fire.

  1. The incident occurred in the Wetterau District, specifically on Autobahn 5, and affected the traffic in the Central Hessia region.
  2. To ensure safety during the vehicle recovery process, the middle lane of the affected roadway on Autobahn 5 might need to be closed again this morning.
  3. If the road surface at the site of the fire requires scraping off, it will be handled by a specialized company, demonstrating the importance of proper vehicle and traffic management in Hesse.
