Cargo transport - A1 closed after exiting gas station in the morning
Due to leaking gas from a faulty pressure valve on a hazardous materials transporter, the A1 motorway is closed in both directions between Dortmund-Unna and Kamen. The gas is escaping according to police from a damaged pressure relief valve. Both lanes have been closed since Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM. Residents were urged via the warning app Nina to close windows and doors.
Closure since Wednesday evening
The closure lasted until Thursday morning. It is unclear how long it will continue, said a police spokesperson. The gas is believed to be ethylene, a lightly flammable substance.
The city of Unna reported that measurements had shown that a health hazard could not be ruled out and that the substance could easily catch fire. The warning to keep doors and windows closed still applies. Approximately 100 emergency response personnel are on site, according to the city. Experts are analyzing how to secure the hazardous substance.
The Cargo Transporter responsible for the gas leak is a Hazardous Materials Transporter. The A1 motorway closure due to traffic disruption has impacted both Dortmund and Unna in North Rhine-Westphalia. Police are closely monitoring the situation to ensure safety, as multiple accidents have been reported near the gas exit. The closure of the road has caused significant traffic congestion in the area.
