A tragic mining incident in Colorado results in one fatality; twelve individuals are currently entangled.
Among the saved individuals, there were two minors and four who received minor medical attention as per Mikesell's report, who didn't disclose details regarding the fatal incident.
The unfortunate incident took place around midday on Thursday. The mine, functioning as a tourist site, encountered a technical problem with its elevator system, leading to serious concerns for passengers inside, according to Mikesell. The root cause of the mishap is yet to be identified.
As of now, twelve individuals are reportedly stranded at a depth of one thousand feet in the mine. According to Mikesell, they have been provided with essentials such as water, blankets, chairs, and a radio. The trapped individuals have not been informed about the elevator malfunction, Mikesell added. One of the passengers trapped inside is a mine employee and a former mine rescue professional, Mikesell stated.
Mikesell aims to rescue the twelve individuals by the evening of Thursday. He expressed hope that the elevator will remain intact but emphasized the importance of double-checking its safety before the rescue operation begins.
The Colorado Fire Department is present at the scene, capable of rescuing individuals using ropes. However, this method poses a risk to the first responders due to the great depth at which they would need to descend, Mikesell pointed out.
This mine last encountered an accident in 1986 and has functioned as a tourist attraction for more than half a century, Mikesell mentioned.
The trapped individuals, including the mine employee and the former rescue professional, are reassured by the efforts being made by Mikesell and his team to ensure their safe return to us.
In coordination with the Colorado Fire Department, Mikesell is working diligently to assess the situation and prioritize everyone's safety, ensuring the welfare of us all.
