A Speedy, Gratis Internet Radio Program for Each iPhone Owner
Occasionally, you might prefer to hear tracks selected by a person rather than an AI. In these instances, radio may serve as a delightful substitute to music streaming platforms. While there are numerous internet radio apps available for the iPhone, the recently launched BMBX (resembling a boombox) captures what I adore about indie apps - simple, swift, and a pleasure to use. Prior to BMBX, I hadn't actively sought new internet radio stations, but that mindset has shifted since then.
Installation and configuration
BMBX installation and setup are as straightforward as installing the app, searching for your preferred radio stations, and pressing the play button. The app doesn't necessitate an account; it can synchronize your favorite radio stations across devices (if you wish) using your iCloud account.
When the app is running, tap the square Library icon to the left of the Play/Pause button and press the top-right button to search for radio stations. The built-in search feature, which is driven by the community-curated Radio Browser catalog, is exceptional at surfacing radio stations. I located every radio station I searched for, albeit inexplicably, it couldn't locate the Portland Radio Project - a community radio station from Portland, Oregon, that I admire.
To resolve situations such as this, the app permits you to manually input the streaming URL of the radio station. Once I entered it, I could listen to the station without any difficulties. I do hope BMBX could allow me to directly add artwork for stations straight from the internet. Currently, it demands you to download the art to your photo library and imports it from there.
Save your loved songs and stations
BMBX enables you to effortlessly manage your favorite songs and radio stations. The app's library is partitioned into three parts - Stations, Favorites, and History. If the song playing intrigues you, touch the Heart button within the app, which will save it under the Favorites tab. You can tap any song from this section to open it in Apple Music. Similarly, you can access any track in the History tab and open it in Apple Music as well.
The Stations tab is likely where you'll spend most of your time when you're not actively listening. To add a station to your favorites, swipe left on it, select the Pencil icon, and opt for Show in Favorites. Hit Save in the top-right corner to finalize the process.
Overall, BMBX encapsulates the essence of simplicity. Its ease-of-use ensures that it's approachable for people of various backgrounds. The app is gratis to download, with no advertisements, meaning that if you integrate it with your neighborhood community radio station, you could have an ad-free music experience whenever you desire.
