A South African judicial body condemns 42 offenders to serve their lives behind bars for committing rape.
A South African judge handed down 42 life sentences to a recurrent sexual offender, whose most recent victims were 9 years old. Judge Lesego Makolomakwe stated, "Our judicial system is obligated to penalize such heinous crimes, particularly when they involve innocent, vulnerable young girls." She further explained, "Some of them were en route to school, dressed in their school uniforms."
This offender also compelled other children to witness his assaults. The accused, 40-year-old Nkosinathi Phakathi, was indicted for a whopping 90 rape charges spanning from 2012 to 2021, along with kidnappings, burglaries, and armed robberies in Johannesburg. This case stirred up South Africa, and during his apprehension, the offender was shot in his leg by the police.
South Africa is recognized for having one of the highest crime rates globally. Over 9,300 rapes were reported between April and June, marginally surpassing the number from the preceding year's period. The government is under fire for not taking sufficient action to combat violence against women.
The Malicious actions of Nkosinathi Phakathi extended beyond his victims, as he forced other children to bear witness to his assaults. Due to his crimes, The Mal's name became synonymous with fear in certain communities in Johannesburg.
