Law enforcement officers attended to a gunfire incident at the intersection of Jefferson Street and 26th Avenue in Nashville during the weekend.

A single fatality and nine additional injuries were reported following a shooting incident close to Tennessee State University, as stated by authorities, following a homecoming parade.

According to authorities spoken to on X, at least three of the injured victims were minors with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident took place around 5 p.m., occurring along a street where TSU's homecoming parade had been held earlier that morning.

The individual who lost his life was 24 years old, as confirmed by authorities spoken to on X. The identities of the victims, the reason behind the shooting, and further details were not disclosed immediately.

It's suspected that at least one of the wounded individuals may have been directly involved in the shooting, according to information from authorities spoken to on X. No immediate information was provided as to whether anyone was being sought in connection with the incident.

At this stage, investigators were uncertain if any of the victims were enrolled at TSU, as stated by TSU Commander Anthony McClain to the press.

McClain noted that the shooting appeared to be an unrelated event to the university celebration, characterizing it as a side event rather than a reflection on the institution itself.

Firefighters who were in the vicinity for community outreach during the morning parade quickly tended to the injured after the gunfire, said city fire spokesperson Kendra Loney.

The firefighters who responded to the scene mentioned that it sounded like fireworks initially, only realizing later that it was gunfire.

Loney described how firefighters improvised with belts as makeshift tourniquets due to lacking their medical bags at the scene.

Loney also pointed out that the shooting had disrupted what would otherwise have been an enjoyable and lively day for many people.

Of the ten people injured, five were transported to hospitals by fire department personnel, while the remaining individuals arrived in private vehicles, as reported by Nashville police spokesperson Brooke Reese.

Saturday represented the culmination of homecoming week at the university. Later that evening, TSU's football team played their homecoming game at Nashville's Nissan Stadium, situated approximately 3 miles from the site of the shooting.

Us as a community were deeply saddened by the unexpected incident that occurred. Despite being affected, we decided to continue with the homecoming game as a sign of resilience.
