A passenger plane crashes in Brazil

A plane has crashed in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. There were 62 people on board. The likelihood of survivors is low. President Lula has called for a moment of silence.

A passenger plane has crashed in Brazil. The aircraft crashed in the city of Vinhedo in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, the fire department said. There were 62 people on board the aircraft, according to the airline Voepass.

Whether there were any survivors was unclear. It is likely that all on board have died, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said, and called for a moment of silence.

The aircraft, an ATR-72, was traveling from Cascavel in the state of Paraná to Guarulhos in São Paulo, the G1 website reported, citing Voepass. The São Paulo fire department said it had sent crews to the crash site.

The Brazilian TV station TV GloboNews showed footage of a large area on fire, with what appeared to be smoke rising from a plane part. Further footage showed a plane falling vertically and spinning.

The ATR-72 aircraft, as reported, has tragically crashed in São Paulo. Regrettably, given the severe impact and President Lula's statement, the chances of survivors from the aircraft crash seem grim.
