succession - A new CDU General Secretary should be found in the summer
CDU-Faction Leader Gordon Schnieder is looking for a successor for the position of General Secretary. "After my nomination for the chairmanship of the party and the candidacy for the state election in 2026 by the CDU Landesvorstand, I am now having conversations with potential candidates and candidates," Schnieder told the German Press Agency in Mainz. The 49-year-old from the Eifel has been the Faction Leader in the Landtag since April 2023 and has been the General Secretary of the Rhineland-Palatinate CDU since March 2022.
"I am sure that we will make this central personnel decision internally over the summer break and inform the public accordingly," Schnieder said. "We ask for a little more patience."
The Landesvorstand nominated Schnieder for the chairmanship and the candidacy on the previous Tuesday. With this, he is running against the newly elected Minister President Alexander Schweitzer (SPD). The party conference is planned for September 21 in Frankenthal.
