A Navy boat burns out in the vicinity of Rostock-Warnemünde

Before the start of the traditional Hanse Sail in Rostock, a barge caused a stir: A naval traffic boat caught fire in sight of the coast. The cause is still unknown. Two people on board were rescued. A report has been filed.

In the fire of a naval barge off Warnemünde, the two crew members were slightly injured. The cause of the fire in the afternoon is still unclear, according to a naval spokesman. The approximately ten-meter-long and three-meter-wide boat is back at the support point in Warnemünde since the early evening and will now be investigated.

The water police in Rostock were informed around 4 p.m. about the boat burning fully ablaze about 1.5 nautical miles off the coast, as a spokeswoman reported. The fire department extinguished the fire. A report of negligent bodily harm has been filed. According to the "Ostsee-Zeitung", thick smoke and the extinguishing work could be seen from the beach in Warnemünde.

According to the naval spokesman, the barge belongs to the support point in Warnemünde and was supposed to support the Hanse Sail, which begins in Rostock tomorrow. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected at the maritime festival every year.

The German Navy is traditionally present at the maritime festival. Among others, the training ship "Gorch Fock" is there in Warnemünde and can be visited.

The burned barge was meant for providing support during the Hanse Sail, and its shipping schedule may be affected. Despite the incident, the Hanse Sail is expected to begin as scheduled with the German Navy's participation.
