A mayor was killed in western Mexico.
In just a day after Claudia Sheinbaum took office as the new President of Mexico, a mayor was brutally gunned down in the country's western region on Monday. The Michoacán state government strongly denounced the disturbing murder of "Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, the mayor of Cotija" in a statement by its Interior Ministry. A thorough investigation is now underway to capture the assailants.
Local reports indicate that Yolanda was sensationally executed by armed men on a busy street while in a vehicle. Security authorities suspect that the killers are linked to the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). They are suspected to have killed the mayor due to her determination to keep CJNG members out of her city's police force.
Recently, Yolanda was kidnapped for three days in September, as reported by the local media, while leaving a shopping mall in Guadalajara. As a representative of the conservative National Action Party (PAN), she was voted into office as mayor in 2021.
As a major milestone, Mexico has marked its first female leader in its history with Sheinbaum, a left-wing former mayor from Mexico City, being elected as the head of state on Sunday. This incredible feat comes after the populist outgoing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, brought the left to power in Mexico back in 2018. However, the campaign was overshadowed by violence, with at least 25 local politicians losing their lives.
