A German vacationer succumbs while trekking in Crete.

This summer, several tourists have perished while hiking on the Greek islands, with vacationers frequently underestimating the weather's harshness. More recently, rescue workers in Crete have uncovered the remains of a German vacationer in a secluded area.

As reported by the fire department, the man's body was found near the Agios Antonios monastery in Chania, a challenging location to access. The individual, aged around 60, failed to return from his hiking expedition on Friday, prompting an extensive search involving firefighters and the coast guard on Saturday in the Chania area.

The man embarked on the hike alongside his family members. When he failed to show up at the designated meeting spot by evening, they contacted local authorities, as per reports from the Greek news agency Ana.

Throughout the year, at least five tourists have lost their lives while hiking on renowned Greek islands, often due to irresponsible behavior, such as hiking during midday heat, venturing out alone, or engaging in such activities despite their advanced age. Some reports also indicate that alcohol consumption prior to these hikes may have played a role in some incidents. The weather conditions have since improved, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius.

Recently, the tragedy of a renowned British journalist, who worked for the BBC, made headlines. He disappeared on the island of Symi in early June and was subsequently found deceased. Authorities believe he made a wrong turn while hiking and suffered a collapse in a remote area, which proved challenging for the search team to locate.

The European Union issued a travel advisory for Greece, urging tourists to exercise caution while hiking due to the increasing number of fatalities. The German tourist's death was reported to the European Union's embassy in Athens.
