The man who was shot and killed by the marksman at Donald Trump's campaign rally in the small town of Butler was identified as Corey Comperatore. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro made this announcement at a press conference and added that the 50-year-old had thrown himself on his family to shield them. "Corey was the best among us," Shapiro said. The man was "a hero in his dying moments."

According to local media reports, Comperatore was the former chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Department.

His sister posted on social media: "The hatred for a man took the life of the man we loved most. He was a hero, protecting his daughters. His wife and girls have just experienced the unthinkable and unimaginable."

Shapiro stated that Comperatore was a Trump supporter. In response to a question about his plans for the weekend, this was Trump's last message on X: "Event with Trump! In Butler, Pennsylvania."

Trump expresses condolences

During the rally in the small town of Butler, a man shot at the Republican presidential candidate; Trump was injured in the ear. The 20-year-old perpetrator was killed. Besides the one man in the audience who died, two more spectators were critically injured. Shapiro stated that their condition was further critical.

Trump expressed his condolences to the victims and their families after the attack. "We pray for the recovery of the wounded and keep in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was killed in such a heinous way," Trump wrote in a post on his social network "Truth Social."

Meanwhile, a fundraising campaign was started on the platform "gofundme" for Comperatore's daughter. Within hours, several hundred thousand US dollars were collected.

Despite the attempts to harm him during the rally, Donald Trump expressed his sympathies towards the victims and the families who were affected, including Corey Comperatore, the Trump supporter who lost his life shielding his family. Trump's last social media post before the incident was about an event with him in Butler, Pennsylvania.
