A driver in Niederbayern, on the run from the police, hit six pedestrians with his car and seriously injured four of them during the "Donau in Flammen" city festival in Vilshofen (Landkreis Passau), according to a police spokesperson. The 24-year-old Georgian reportedly drove towards the event participants with his car, losing control while making a left turn at high speed. According to the police, there were eight people in the vehicle, including five children.
At this point, it can be assumed that four of the victims were seriously injured, the police announced early on Sunday morning. Previously, a police spokesperson had spoken of three moderately injured and three lightly injured persons. No further details about the nature and severity of the injuries were available.
The police intended to control the driver on the B8 between Passau and Vilshofen on the Saturday evening. However, the man fled with significantly excessive speed towards Vilshofen. After the accident, the fleeing man continued driving without caring for the injured. In Vilshofen, he got his car stuck in a dead-end street. He got out and fled on foot, but was soon arrested by officers. In the process, he lightly injured two police officers.
The "Donau in Flammen" promenade festival is a popular attraction with many thousands of visitors, the police spokesperson continued. On one side of the Danube, the visitors gather, while on the other side, a fireworks display takes place.
