A driver in Niederbayern, in the flight from the police, hit and injured six pedestrians with his car in Vilshofen (Landkreis Passau), according to a police spokesperson. The victims were reportedly visitors of the "Donau in Flammen" festival. The driver had allegedly driven to the event, when he lost control of his car while making a left turn at an excessive speed. Three people were seriously injured, and three others lightly, according to the spokesperson.
The police had intended to control the driver on the B8 highway between Passau and Vilshofen on Saturday evening. However, the man fled with significantly excessive speed towards Vilshofen. After the accident, he continued driving, disregarding the injured.
The man then got into a dead-end street in Vilshofen. He got out of the car and fled on foot, but was soon apprehended by officers. During the arrest, he allegedly injured two police officers lightly.
The "Donau in Flammen" promenade festival is a popular attraction with many thousands of attendees, the police spokesperson added. The visitors congregate on one side of the Danube, while the other side hosts the fireworks display.
