"A child or teenager is killed in Gaza every ten minutes"

According to the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the coastal region, Richard Peeperkorn, the situation in the Gaza Strip is becoming increasingly unbearable due to the constant Israeli attacks. "The situation is getting worse by the hour," he reported on Tuesday from Rafah on the Gaza Strip's border with Egypt. He spoke to reporters in Geneva via a video link. "Every ten minutes a child or teenager is killed in Gaza," Peeperkorn said.

James Elder, spokesman for the UN children's charity Unicef, criticized Israel's calls for people to leave neighborhoods and go to safe zones. There are no safe zones in the Gaza Strip, Elder said via video link from Cairo. Such zones should have health facilities, water and food, but they are just small wastelands, or sometimes just sidewalks. "I think the authorities know this and I find it heartless. It reinforces the indifference towards children and women, and this indifference is deadly."

Instead of handing over medical supplies, the WHO was also forced to evacuate two warehouses in the southern city of Chan Junis at the drop of a hat. The Israeli army had told them to do so, pointing out that the warehouses were located in a district where there was likely to be fighting. The WHO had found a smaller camp near Rafah and had already moved 90 percent of the material, said Peeperkorn. The Israeli army denied on Monday that it had ordered the evacuation of the camps.
