A Berliner Fanmeile's gastronomy draws a mediocre balance

The weather and days without transmissions at Brandenburger Tor were not beneficial for the operators in the fan zones. Therefore, they have a wish for the upcoming major soccer tournaments.

When EM games were shown at Brandenburg Gate, it went well for the restaurant.

European Football Championship - A Berliner Fanmeile's gastronomy draws a mediocre balance

The gastronomes at the fan zones near the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag in Berlin look at the business during the European Football Championship with mixed feelings. A large part of the operators were satisfied, said Arnold Bergmann, owner of Bergmann Eventgastronomy. However, the free days at the fan mile on the Brandenburg Gate had set them back, there were significantly fewer visitors on those days. "It was weak to poor for the gastronomes", so Bergmann.

His company had coordinated the applications of the vendors for the fan zones. Approximately 30 to 35 stands offer food and beverages at both locations, including vegetarian and vegan options. At the Reichstag, all European Championship games have been shown so far, but on the large screens at the Brandenburg Gate, selected matches were broadcast - for example, the Germany games and the matches in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

Bad luck with the weather and thunderstorm warnings

"Of course, we had bad luck with the weather", said Bergmann. During the European Championship group stage match between Poland and Austria in Berlin, the fan zones were closed due to thunderstorm danger. For future football tournaments like the European Championship and World Cup, it makes sense to broadcast every game, said the event gastronome.

The fan miles will be dismantled on Monday (15. July) after the final between England and Spain. The artificial grass laid on the Straße des 17. Juni will then be used on Berliner Bolzplätze. For the large football goal, which stands as decoration at the Brandenburg Gate and was supposed to be scrapped, a new opportunity has recently arisen: It is for sale.
