A 57-year-old woman drowns in her car engulfed by floodwater.
In South Germany, five lives have sadly been claimed by the recent flooding. A 57-year-old woman tragically lost her life after disregarding a closed off section of road and driving into the water. Her emergency call to rescuers reached them too late.
The number of lives lost in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg as a result of the floods has risen to five, police have confirmed. In Markt Rettenbach, Bavaria, a woman lost control of her car and veered off the road into a water-filled field. Sadly, she was later found to have perished.
Investigations suggest that the woman was driving on a state road in Markt Rettenbach when she ignored a barrier. At a flooded area, the woman's car left the road and plunged into a meadow. The water level was so high that the vehicle was quickly submerged.
The woman had made a frantic call for help on her phone, telling rescuers her car was filling with water. Upon finding her vehicle, a member of the water management office reported that it was almost completely submerged, prompting the police to describe the incident as a tragic accident.
Earlier, officials had reported four fatalities caused by the floods. A 43-year-old woman passed away in Schrobenhausen, Upper Bavaria, having been trapped in a flooded cellar over the weekend. On Sunday morning, a firefighter was found dead in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Bavaria, who met his end during a rescue operation.
Another firefighter in Swabia remains missing, while in Baden-Württemberg, rescuers recovered two bodies on Monday from an empty cellar in Schorndorf, in the heavily flooded Rems-Murr district. These victims were a 58-year-old homeowner and his 84-year-old mother.
