A 57-year-old individual submerges in their car due to floodwater.
Five lives have been claimed by the flooding in South Germany. A 57-year-old woman disregarded a closed off road section in her car, driving through it and falling into the water. Unfortunately, her emergency call on her phone reached the rescuers too late for rescue.
The total number of casualties due to flooding in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg has increased to five, according to the local police. In the town of Markt Rettenbach in Bavaria, a woman crashed her car into the river after driving past a blocked road. Medical officials confirmed her death upon arrival.
It is believed that the woman disregarded a barrier and lost control of her car, sliding off the road and into a flooded area. The high water level caused the car to become submerged almost instantly.
The woman reportedly called for help, telling the rescuers that her vehicle was filled with water. Unfortunately, an employee of the water management office found her car overtaken by water and reported her death.
Authorities had initially only reported four casualties. One occurred in Schrobenhausen, Upper Bavaria, where a 43-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries in a flooded basement. A late Sunday morning rescue operation in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Bavaria, led to the death of a firefighter.
Another firefighter is still missing in Swabia. In the heavily flood affected Rems-Murr-District of Baden-Württemberg, rescuers found two dead in an empty basement. They identified an elderly homeowner, 58, and his 84-year-old mother.
