Kamala Harris quickly secured the necessary majority in the party's internal vote for the U.S. presidential candidate. Following the conclusion of the vote, it is clear: Democrats are united behind her. Meanwhile, she's keeping the suspense going regarding her running mate.

After the conclusion of the Democrats' internal vote, Kamala Harris is heading into the November presidential election with full party support. She received 99 percent of the approximately 4,500 delegate votes cast, the Democratic Party announced. She had already surpassed the threshold for the necessary majority for the nomination on Friday. Harris was the only candidate in the digital vote - her nomination still needs to be formally confirmed by the party's leadership bodies.

The Democratic National Convention in Chicago is scheduled for August 19-22. The presidential nomination process was originally supposed to take place there, but the party moved it up due to deadlines for printing ballots in some states. Since Thursday, party delegates from all states have been able to cast their votes on an online platform. Although Harris reached the majority shortly thereafter, the voting continued.

Harris became the face of the Democrats in a dramatic turn of events after U.S. President Joe Biden withdrew from the race. The 81-year-old had come under pressure due to his age and doubts about his mental fitness within his own ranks and eventually announced his withdrawal from the presidential race. Biden proposed Harris as his replacement candidate upon his exit, and the party quickly rallied behind her. The Democrat will face former Republican President Donald Trump in the November election.

Who will be her running mate?

The question of who Kamala Harris will choose as her running mate remains open. According to media reports, she has narrowed down the potential candidates to two. U.S. media reported on Monday that Harris has narrowed down her decision to Governor Josh Shapiro of the state of Pennsylvania and Governor Tim Walz of the state of Minnesota. Harris is expected to announce her decision in a video message. On Monday evening (local time), Harris stated, "I have not made my decision yet."

The decision is eagerly awaited. Harris had announced a few days ago that she would embark on a multi-day campaign tour through seven "swing states" with her "running mate" on this Tuesday. The tour is scheduled to begin with an appearance in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The candidate alongside Harris is expected to help her reach a broader range of voter groups and win in the "swing states" - the key battleground states.

After Joe Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race, Kamala Harris has yet to announce her choice for running mate. Media reports suggest she has narrowed down her options to Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota.
