88-year-old from Hamburg accidentally drives to Denmark
An 88-year-old man from Hamburg drove over 150 kilometers to Denmark on his way to his wife's nursing home. The Federal Police in Flensburg announced that the disoriented pensioner was discovered at a crossroads in Padborg, Denmark, in his car on Sunday. Danish police handed him over to the Federal Police, who took care of him.
According to the Federal Police, they contacted the man's nephew with the assistance of the Hamburg Police to arrange for his pick-up at the German border crossing in Harrislee. The 88-year-old was reportedly on his way to the nursing home of his wife, which was only six kilometers away, when he "for unknown reasons" drove further north on the autobahn towards Denmark and ended up in Padborg just across the border.
The pensioner appeared disoriented and could not explain how he had crossed the border into the neighboring country. The Federal Police advised him to leave his car and arranged for his pick-up. The man's car is reportedly to be picked up separately in the coming days.
The 88-year-old's journey took him beyond the expected six kilometers to Hamburg, as he unintentionally drove towards Padborg, a town in Denmark. Upon realizing the elderly man's nationality, the International cooperation between the Danish and German Federal Police came into play, ensuring his safe return to Germany.
