Second World War - 80 years late: Award for British veterans
A British veteran, nearly 80 years after the end of the Second World War, has been honored with medals for his service. The now 98-year-old George Lewis served as a tank commander and earned awards during engagements in Belgium and Germany, according to a report by the British news agency PA. However, he had not received these medals until now.
Not thinking about it anymore
The veteran, who lives with his daughter in the western English county of Somerset, was reportedly overwhelmed by the late recognition. "It's incredible," he told PA.
He hadn't thought about it for a long time and had simply lived his life. The topic only came up again when he recently mentioned it to his neighbor. His neighbor's brother had, coincidentally, served in the same regiment.
"War Medal 1939-45" and "France and Germany Star"
The regiment was able to find a complete report on his service. "The next thing I know is that I was presented with the medals," Lewis recalled.
He was awarded the "War Medal 1939-45" and the "France and Germany Star". "It's nice to know that they respect what we did for the people," summarized the Senior.
George's service during the Second World War was not limited to Belgium and Germany, as he served in the Military as a tank commander. This distinction earned him several awards, including the "War Medal 1939-45" and the "France and Germany Star." Despite living a full life in the United Kingdom, the recognition of his service in the later stages of his life was a profound moment for him. The history of the Second World War and the role of allied nations, such as the United Kingdom and Belgium, in defeating Germany, continues to be a significant part of global history.
