- 62 dead in plane crash in Brazil
An airplane carrying 62 people crashed in the Brazilian state of São Paulo. The number of fatalities in the crash in the city of Vinhedo is still unclear. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said at an event that all passengers on board the aircraft appeared to have died.
The news portal "G1" reported, citing the city administration, that the plane crashed in a residential area. The fire department also confirmed the crash and is reportedly on the scene with seven rescue teams.
Hospitals in Vinhedo were preparing to receive injured passengers, as reported by "G1". In addition to the fire department, the civil defense and police are also on the scene.
Images and videos on social media showed a plane spinning out of control and falling from the sky, followed by thick smoke.
President Lula asked those present at the event in southern Brazil to observe a minute of silence. "A very sad news. My deepest sympathies go out to the families and friends of the victims," he posted on the X platform.
The Governor of São Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas, said: "My solidarity goes out to all the victims and those affected by this tragedy." He promised to provide all necessary support and publish all necessary information.
"There is still no confirmation of how the accident happened or the current situation of the people on board," VoePass airline said in an initial Instagram post about the incident.
According to the airline, there were 58 passengers and four crew members on board the aircraft. The plane was reportedly traveling from the city of Cascavel in the state of Paraná to Guarulhos in São Paulo. São Paulo–Guarulhos is the largest airport in Brazil.
The fire department is currently investigation the causes of the aircraft crash in Vinhedo. Despite the efforts of the rescue teams, the fate of many passengers remains unknown after the aircraft crash in São Paulo.
