1. No More Debates for Trump

Former President Donald Trump declared that he won't join in on a third presidential debate against Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump expressed this through a post on Truth Social, referencing his debates with President Joe Biden and Harris. He stated that he doesn't require a redo because he was triumphant in the recent debate, though every major scientific poll revealed that Harris emerged victorious, according to CNN's fact-check. Harris expressed her desire for another chance during a rally in Charlotte, arguing that "this election and what's at stake is too crucial for voters to miss out on another debate."

2. Boeing Strike

Approximately 33,000 union members at Boeing turned down a four-year contract offer from the plane manufacturing giant. The union members commenced a strike today, protesting against past contract terms. The ongoing strike will disrupt aircraft production at one of America's largest manufacturing corporations and key exporters, impacting the US economy. This strike will not affect consumer travel but might prolong deliveries of promised jets to airlines, leading to a shortage of Boeing's main source of income. Boeing remains willing to return to negotiations to hammer out a new deal.

3. Affordable Housing Woes

Mortgage rates dropped this week to a new low since February 2023, providing some relief for homebuyers in a tough housing market. The standard 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.20% in the week ending September 12, according to Freddie Mac. Despite reduced borrowing costs, the US housing market remains unaffordable for countless home seekers, especially those with low income levels. Additionally, many renters are also grappling with affordability, especially in urban areas like New York City, Los Angeles, and the Miami metropolitan area, demonstrating a striking issue in housing affordability.

4. Russian Warning to NATO

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned NATO leaders that permitting Ukraine to use longer-range Western missiles to strike within Russia would be regarded as an act of war. In Putin's words, "This will mean that NATO countries — the United States and European countries — are at war with Russia. And if this is the case, then, bearing in mind the shift in the nature of the conflict, we will implement appropriate responses to the threats we will face." Putin's statement comes during a time when President Joe Biden and NATO allies appear more open to the possibility of allowing Ukrainian forces to employ Western-supplied long-range weapons systems against Russian targets.

5. Typhoon Yagi’s Destruction

Typhoon Yagi, the most potent storm in Asia this year, has resulted in significant damage and casualties across southern China and Southeast Asia since its landfall last week. Over 200 individuals have perished in Vietnam following the storm's aftermath, and dozens more remain missing due to flash floods and landslides, according to state media Thursday. Yagi has left a trail of devastation following days of severe rainfall and winds over 90 mph, causing rivers to overflow dangerously. The heavy rains also damaged factories in Vietnam's industrial hubs.
