1. DNC Update

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz officially accepted the vice presidential nomination in his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday. He introduced himself as a father, coach, teacher, hunter, and neighbor as he explained how Kamala Harris would lead the nation if elected to be the 47th president. The third night of the convention saw appearances from figures like former President Bill Clinton, who advocated for Harris, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who stated that the vice president is ready to elevate the country to new heights. Oprah Winfrey depicted the 2024 election as a battle for freedom and an opportunity to "choose joy." Later today, Harris is expected to give a highly anticipated speech in Chicago, accepting the Democratic Party's historic presidential nomination.

2. Canadian Rail Disruption

The operations of Canada's two major freight railroads, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Southern, have been halted due to a work stoppage involving 9,000 Teamsters union members. The shutdown could potentially harm both the Canadian and US economies, as nearly a third of the freight handled by these railroads travels between the US and Canada. Daily operations in several American industries, such as agriculture, automobiles, construction, and energy, may be affected due to this disruption.

3. Gaza Conflict

Thousands of Palestinians in Gaza have received new evacuation orders from the Israeli military. Videos show people leaving areas closer to the central Gazan city of Deir al-Balah. Some are moving in cars loaded with personal belongings and supplies. Streets are littered with leaflets dropped by the Israeli military reiterating the evacuation orders. Many residents have had to evacuate multiple times, leaving them in a persistent state of displacement and fear. As of now, roughly 84% of the enclave has been issued evacuation orders since the war began.

4. US Military News

The US has increased its forces in the Middle East in preparation for a potential Iranian attack, as per US Central Command. USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group has arrived in the area following an accelerated transit command due to concerns that Iran may retaliate against Israel after the assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran. Separately, a federal US court ruled that the US military is prohibited from denying enlistment to individuals living with HIV. Judge Leonie Brinkema stated that the ban on HIV-positive people serving in the military perpetuates stigma and hampers military recruitment goals.

Gus Walz is visibly emotional as he witnesses his father, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, deliver his acceptance speech for the vice presidential nomination, during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

5. Modi's International Tour

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet with Polish leaders before his expected visit to Ukraine on Friday. This marks the first such visit to Ukraine in its history. Modi's tour comes shortly after his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which were described by Zelensky as a significant setback to peace efforts. Modi has continuously advocated for a truce in Ukraine, without condemning Russia or supporting UN resolutions demanding Russian withdrawal and condemnation of its actions.
