1. Port labor dispute
Thousands of striking port workers will resume their jobs today following a preliminary deal reached between the International Longshoremen’s Association and negotiators on Thursday. The 50,000 union members working at ports from Maine to Texas had been on strike since Tuesday due to wage disputes and fear of job losses due to increased automation. U.S. President Joe Biden commended the tentative wage agreement. "I congratulate the dockworkers from the ILA, who have earned a strong contract after giving so much to keep our ports operational throughout the pandemic," he said. The Biden administration was motivated to prevent economic harm from a prolonged strike, as it could have led to shortages of certain U.S. imports and amplified public dissatisfaction with the economy prior to the election.
2. Political race
Former Republican representative Liz Cheney campaigned alongside Vice President Kamala Harris in the competitive state of Wisconsin on Thursday. Cheney criticized former President Donald Trump's actions on January 6, 2021, and claimed that anyone who exhibits such behavior should never again be entrusted with power. Her goal was to persuade undecided voters. The latest CNN polls in the state indicate a deadlock between Harris and Trump, with the national presidential race remaining close as well. Meanwhile, Trump visited Michigan on Thursday and voiced criticism of the Biden-Harris administration's response to Hurricane Helene, falsely alleging that Harris had misused FEMA funds.
3. Helene's aftermath
At least 213 people have lost their lives since Hurricane Helene battered the Southeast over a week ago. The search for missing individuals grows increasingly desperate each day, as officials report that hundreds are unaccounted for, and rescue teams struggle with ongoing cell service outages and damaged roads. People report hiking for hours to check on missing loved ones and spending hours searching soaked river banks for those swept away with their homes. In North Carolina's Buncombe County, where Asheville is located, more than 200 individuals were reported missing as of Thursday, and 72 deaths have been confirmed so far, according to the county sheriff. Hurricane Helene has become the deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and officials fear the death toll will continue to rise.
4. Middle East
The Israeli military promised to continue targeting Hezbollah sites in Beirut and southern Lebanon following fresh airstrikes in the Lebanese capital during the night. Tensions have been escalating as Middle Eastern countries prepare for Israel's response to Iran's ballistic missile attack earlier this week. Analysts warn that the rising tensions on multiple fronts could push the region to the brink before the first anniversary of Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel. Israeli officials have also ordered evacuations for more villages in southern Lebanon, indicating an expansion of its ground operations. Nearly 1 million people have been displaced due to Israel's escalation with Hezbollah.
5. Avian flu
Two California farmworkers tested positive for the bird flu on Thursday, according to the CDC. This is the first reported case of the virus in humans in California. Both farmworkers were employed on different dairy farms in California's Central Valley, where poultry and cattle were known to carry the H5N1 avian influenza. Health officials maintain that the risk to the public remains low, but they are closely monitoring the virus as each human infection has the potential to alter the virus, making it better adapted to humans. Nine additional human cases of bird flu have been reported in the U.S. since March, and most of them have been linked to ongoing poultry and dairy cattle outbreaks.
