1. Storm Helene

Helene hit land in Florida's Big Bend on Thursday as a Category 4 hurricane, bringing over 9 feet of storm surge along the coast. At least three hurricane-related deaths have been reported, and widespread destruction to homes and infrastructure has been observed. Although Helene has weakened to a tropical storm, warnings and watches remain in place for 60 million people across 12 states as it moves through central Georgia today. On Wednesday, the hurricane caused havoc in parts of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and Cuba. Heavy rain flooded cars in certain areas of Mexico's Quintana Roo, while the coastline was pummeled by powerful waves.

2. Israel-Lebanon clashes

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to speak at the UN General Assembly today, following statements from his office asserting shared goals with a US-led plan proposing a 21-day truce along the Israel-Lebanon border. As Israel and Hezbollah exchange fresh attacks, Lebanon's foreign minister expressed concerns that the conflict could threaten the entire Middle East and demanded an immediate ceasefire. President Biden announced his endorsement of the US-led plan, which has been supported by Australia, Canada, the EU, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar. However, Netanyahu rejected the multinational proposal, maintaining his commitment to aggressively target Hezbollah until all objectives are achieved.

3. Covid-19 tests

Americans can now request additional free Covid-19 tests from the federal government as the country enters respiratory virus season with high levels of Covid already circulating. Each household is eligible for up to four at-home test kits, which can be obtained from COVIDTests.gov. The kits will be able to detect prevalent Covid-19 variants. The CDC also recommends that individuals aged 6 months and older receive an updated Covid-19 vaccine. Moderna and Pfizer's mRNA vaccines target KP.2, which has been the dominant variant in the US since May. Novavax's vaccine remains an option, focusing on the less prominent but still circulating JN.1 variant.

4. Gun violence

President Biden and Vice President Harris participated in a White House event addressing gun violence on Thursday. Harris, a longtime gun owner, argued against the perceived false dichotomy between preventing shootings and respecting the Second Amendment. She later clarified her stance, advocating for the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban and universal background checks, as well as safe storage laws and red flag laws. Biden highlighted his administration's efforts in reducing gun violence and signed a new executive action that alters active shooter drills in schools. He also established a task force to tackle the challenge of emerging gun technologies, including 3D-printed weapons.

5. Japan election

Shigeru Ishiba will assume the position of Japan's prime minister after winning his party's leadership contest today, marking the end of a tightly contested race including nine candidates. The 67-year-old will lead the scandal-plagued Liberal Democratic Party starting in October. Ishiba narrowly defeated economic security minister Sanae Takaichi in the runoff, aiming to become Japan's first female leader. Ishiba has pursued the leadership of the conservative political force for the fifth time, having overseen Japan for nearly half a century.
