45 percent of Germans aged 16 and over listen to podcasts

45 percent of Germans aged 16 and above listen to Podcasts, according to a survey conducted by Bitkom and announced in Berlin on a Wednesday. On average, they spend two and a half hours per week on Podcasts, Bitkom added, based on a survey of 1205 people. Thirty-seven percent of listeners expressed a willingness to produce their own Podcast once.

There are reportedly differences in listening habits among age groups. Among those aged between 16 and 29, 51 percent listen to Podcasts, while only 35 percent of those aged 65 and above do. In the middle-aged groups of 30-49 and 50-64, the survey found 46 and 50 percent, respectively.

The number of listeners increased only slightly compared to the previous year. However, only 33 percent of Germans listened to Podcasts four years ago, according to Bitkom. Twenty-seven percent of Podcast consumers spend less than an hour per week on them, and 23 percent more than three hours.

Most listeners did not finish each episode completely, according to the survey. Only 36 percent of respondents finished Podcasts regularly. Thirty-nine percent usually listened to more than half of an episode, and 21 percent only to a small extent. The optimal length for a Podcast, according to the survey, was 24 minutes.

The Bitkom survey also revealed that Podcast consumption among Germans aged 16 to 64 has seen a significant increase over the past four years. In the survey, 3 percent of people indicated that they spend over 6 hours per week on Podcasts.
