40 motions, not a single vote: What George Santos really did in the US Congress

George Santos made headlines for a year with his absurd antics. He also tried to score points with political contributions. But the results remained modest.

Dismissed member of parliament - 40 motions, not a single vote: What George Santos really did in the US Congress

Whether it was his numerous invented identities, the scarf stolen from his roommate or embezzled campaign funds: Although he sat in the US Congress for less than a year, George Santos made more headlines during this time than most of his colleagues did in their entire careers. The fact that the Republican also wanted to do political work was somewhat overlooked. Perhaps also because he remained very much alone with his ideas.

This is shown by the overview of his congressional activities. According to the documents, Santos submitted 43 proposals, including 35 bills, five resolutions and three amendments. That is no small number, as the "NBC" emphasizes with reference to evaluations of congressional work. Not one of his legislative initiatives was recognized for a vote. None of them received a single vote. Only two of his extension proposals were actually waved through, including a ban on various US ministries using their budgets to introduce compulsory vaccination.

George Santos found little political support

Santos also had very little support when submitting the bills. Only one of his proposals was even co-signed by another member of Congress. In May, Santos wanted to restrict the power of the Chinese ruling party CCP at US universities and received the support of his party colleague Paul Gosar from Arizona. All other proposals appear to have been simply ignored.

Santos had made every effort to score points with his party colleagues. Several of his drafts were intended to secure the borders of the USA, were directed against alleged election manipulation by the Democrats or were aimed at putting pressure on President Joe Biden. The most important topic of his drafts, however, was China: Santos wanted to declare China the greatest threat to peace and freedom, hold the state accountable for manipulating its currency exchange rate and the outbreak of the Covid pandemic. And even blame the Communist Party for the fentanyl crisis in the USA.

Santos' lack of success could also be due to the fact that he was not part of a committee and therefore did not specialize in specific topics. He was appointed to two committees, one for small businesses and the science committee. However, he resigned from them shortly afterwards when the ethics committee first began investigating his numerous lies.

Laws with a celebrity factor

He didn't even use bizarre tricks to get his colleagues to agree. Santos had named two of the laws after celebrities: The SWIFT Act refers to singer Taylor Swift, the MINAJ Act to rapper Nicki Minaj. In both cases, there is no obvious reference to the famous namesakes: The Swift Act is intended to promote the health of young women, while the MINAJ Act calls for a longer waiting period in the development of vaccines. The biggest success of the designs for Santos: Nicki Minaj apparently liked one of the posts about the message, as "TMZ" reports.

Even with the motions he supported, Santos was unlucky: of the more than 150 motions by his fellow MPs that Santos supported, only one was passed.

Despite his efforts to shape legislation, particularly focused on China and border security, George Santos only managed to co-sign one bill with another congress member. This led to the dismissal of all his other proposals, including those targeting China's power, the Democratic election manipulation, and President Biden. Furthermore, NBC reported that Santos' legislative initiatives failed to receive a single vote in the US Congress. This lack of support can possibly be attributed to Santos' absence from committees and his early resignation following the ethics committee's investigation into his numerous lies.
