A police operation in Baden-Württemberg has resulted in the fatal shooting of a 39-year-old man. He had previously informed his doctor of his intention to commit suicide, according to a joint statement from the State Criminal Police Office in Stuttgart, the police and public prosecutor's office in Offenburg. The incident occurred in the municipality of Oberkirch.
According to the investigators, the doctor called the police after receiving the suicidal threat from his patient. During the subsequent operation at the caller's apartment in a multi-family building, the officers had to forcefully enter the premises. Inside, they found the 39-year-old, who was in a state of psychological distress, bleeding and holding a knife. He then threw the knife towards the police.
In an attempt to assist the man, he allegedly grabbed another knife behind his back and approached the officers in a threatening manner. After several failed requests for him to drop the knife, the police shot him.
The 39-year-old succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful, as reported by the police. The man had previous convictions for multiple acts of violence and violations of the Narcotics Act. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death. The State Criminal Police Office has taken over the investigation.
