Two weeks after the collapse of a highway bridge in China, the death toll has risen significantly to 38. Additionally, the state news agency Xinhua reports that 24 people are still missing.

In the accident in Shaanxi province on July 19, a sudden flood caused a approximately 40-meter section of the bridge to collapse. Initially, it was reported that at least 15 people had died and many were still missing. According to Xinhua, 30 vehicles fell from the bridge into a river during the incident.

More victims in summer floods

Persistent heavy rain and flooding have caused several accidents with fatalities in China this summer. At least 48 people died in May when a section of a highway in southern China also collapsed due to heavy rain.

In another flash flood two weeks ago in a village in southwestern Sichuan province, at least 14 people died and 25 are still missing.

Meanwhile, at least 48 people have died in the central Chinese province of Hunan due to heavy rains from the remnants of Typhoon "Gaemi". Several areas have also experienced flooding, with at least 35 people still missing.

The collapsed highway bridge in China, which led to numerous fatalities and missing individuals, was located in Shaanxi province. Despite repair efforts, the incident caused a 40-meter section of the bridge to deteriorate further, leading to numerous vehicles falling into a nearby river.
