- 253 drowned in German waters
In German waters, the first seven months of this year saw a significant increase in drowning fatalities compared to the same period last year. The number of drownings rose to 253, which was 35 more than last year, according to the German Life Saving Association (DLRG). "If the summer had been more consistent, even more lives would have been lost," said DLRG President Ute Vogt.
For the third consecutive year, more people have died in rivers. This year, there were 92 deaths, compared to 77 last year. "Flowing waters pose the greatest risks," Vogt said.
In response to these rising numbers, the German authorities have issued aSecond alert for swimming areas due to the high risk of drowning. Furthermore, the DLRG has urged the public to be extra cautious during emergency situations involving water.
