One person suffered severe injuries, three others were seriously injured, the Koblenz police reported. 19 people sustained minor injuries, including some with noise-induced trauma. "The cause of the accident is likely, pending further investigation results, the explosion of a pressure bottle behind a box in the area of the paddock," it was stated further.

The six-hour ADAC Ruhr Cup race is scheduled to take place as planned on Saturday. The organizer has given teams and drivers the option to participate in the Nurburgring Endurance Series (NLS) race. The test run served as preparation for the NLS4, in which various classes are set to compete in the six-hour ADAC Ruhr Cup race - the season highlight.

Further investigations in daylight

According to official statements from the organizers, the incident occurred at Box 27 in the paddock, which was also cordoned off by the police along with the surrounding area. According to information from the German Press Agency, four rescue helicopters and several ambulances were deployed at the racetrack, as well as chaplains. On request from dpa, the responsible Koblenz police announced that investigations will continue in daylight on Saturday.

The six-hour ADAC Ruhr Cup race, despite the incident, is still scheduled to take place on Saturday. Despite the ongoing investigations, the ADAC has given teams and drivers the opportunity to participate in the Nurburgring Endurance Series (NLS) race.
